Race Recap #2: Glenwood Springs

Under beautiful blue skies in Glenwood Springs, the GVYC student-athletes put in another stellar performance in the 2nd of 4 Colorado HS Mtn Bike League races.

In the hyper competitive Varsity Divisions, GVYC riders managed to grab 1 Podium, a top 5 and 3 top 10's.  Ben Garmany as a sophomore continued to hang with older more experienced racers to land on the podium in third place.  Teammate and fellow sophomore, Jonathan Azbell, also rode well and claimed 9th place.  Legacy rider Evan Pipkin had a strong finish in 21st place. In the varsity girls, Scarlett Hardie rode a smart, tactical race by hanging on the wheels of 3 Durango riders through most of the race.  A late charge sped her by one of them to improve on her 5th place finish in Leadville to take 4th. Showing her determination and perseverance, Siena Guzman-Newton overcame a couple of hard crashes early in the race and twisted handlebars to land in 7th place.  Legacy rider Kate Rizzo filled out the top 10 in 10th place.

The Junior Varsity division is the largest group of racers in the league.  In the JV Girls division, Izabelle Barney’s 10th place finish led GVYC with Indica Dobbins (15th),  Mina Bless (16th), Megan Steidel (17th) and Sofia Reitz (18th) all finishing in the top twenty.  12 GVYC riders faced off against 100 racers in the JV Boys division.  When the dust settled, Riley Grimes stood on the podium in 3rd place followed closely by Rowan Ferguson in 5th and Finn Sharp in 9th.  Porter Landis rode to one of his strongest finishes in 15th.  Mason Znamenacek (18th), Ty Gardner (19th) and Daniel Lawrence (20th) capped an impressive 6 GVYC riders in the top 20. Other GVYC JV Boys included Owen Hoffman in 28th, Brody Elliott in 63rd, Lucas Preslan in 85th, Spencer Gordon in 93rd and, in his first race ever and starting at the back of the field, Sawyer Jacobson made several passes to land in 89th.

In the Sophomore Girls, Alma McGowan and Beck Sharp were happy to ride under blue skies on dry trails to continue their dominance over the rest of the field by taking 1st and 2nd place.  With close to 70 racers, the Sophomore boys was the 2nd largest group of the weekend. 5 GVYC riders had solid races led by John Kuzminski (18th) and followed by Weston Hildebrandt (41st), Colton Carter (47th), Dylan Pickering (55th) and Trae Pruss (63rd).

In the Freshman categories, the lone female Kyra Finney rode to 18th in her first Colorado League race. The GVYC boys placed two in the top ten with Talen Hoffman in 7th and Max Xu in 10th. Other Freshman Boys included Elijah Meyer (14th), Cade Gardner (17th), Oliver Gustafson (23rd), Jaxon Engbarth (40th), Milo Bhagatram-Jackson (61st), Liam Preslan (63rd) and Nick Haldeman (64th).

In the season overall standings, Alma McGowan held on to her Points Leader Jersey in the Sophomore Girls followed by Beck Sharp in 2nd.  Ben Garmany sits in 3rd on the season for Varsity Boys with Scarlett Hardie staying at 5th in Varsity Girls.  Riley Grimes is sitting just outside the top 3 in 4th for the JV Boys.

In the team categories, Grand Junction High School once again came out on top in Division 2 and solidified their season lead.  Palisade took third in Division 3 to remain in 3rd place overall.  Fruita Monument High School placed 15th and is in 12th on the season.

GVYC athletes gets back to the start line at Race #3 in Eagle on Sept 24th.
