High School Race Team: Race #1- Leadville Recap

By Jon Casson 09/05/2024, 3:45pm MDT

On August 25th, under remarkably sunny skies, The High School team jumped right into their first Colorado League race of the season. The GVYC riders stepped up and rode great, propelling both GJHS and FMHS to 2nd place in their respective divisions.  While there were many standout performances, the  highlight was the Freshman girls.  As the last race of the day, there was plenty of time for tension to build. Right up to staging and start, there was nervousness and some big emotions. But when they lined up at the start line, the nervous looks started to turn into smiles.  And they kept smiling throughout their first race as High School athletes. And they kept smiling after they finished (even if they took a big crash!). And, as soon as they caught their breath in the finish area, they immediately went back to the course to cheer on their teammates.  These 4 freshman girls did everything GVYC stands for– rode hard, pushed themselves, had fun and supported their teammates.  Jayden Fox led the group with a 7th place barely edging out teammate Zia Leonard by 2 seconds. Ailyn Ferris finished 12th and Lucy McLaughlin ended up in 18th. With a great start to their season under their belts, the next race in Eagle should be another step in their High School racing.

Prior to the Freshman Girls, the rest of the GVYC team tackled the challenging, high elevation and high speed course.  With the largest category in the Colorado League, the JV Boys led off the season.  GVYC made up 15% of the field with 11 riders competing.  Leading the charge was Weston Hildebrand in 16th followed closely by James Stucky in 18th and John Kuzminski in 20th. New rider to the team, Rylan Graham slotted into 38th place. Other GVYC riders were Emil Caiza-Valera in 44th, Brody Elliott 55th, Colton Carter 59th, Spencer Gordon 63rd, Dylan Pickering 67th, Parker Hudson 68th and Lucas Preslan (pictured) in 78th.

Next up were the Varsity Boys and Girls- the smallest, but most competitive groups of the day.  GVYC rolled deep with 4 riders in the girls field.  Returning to her 2023 form, Scarlett Hardie rode a strong race to a 4th place finish. After dominating the Sophomore Girls in 2023, Beck Sharp (10th) and Alma McGowan (15th) stepped up to a longer race to start their Varsity careers.  Senior Kate Grossman finished 17th, also her first varsity race.

The Varsity Boys took to the start line next.  Ben Garmany (4th) and Jonathan Azbell (8th) were the youngest in the Varsity field in 2023 and returned as "seasoned" Juniors in 2024.  Picking up right where they left off, the dynamic duo led the charge for GVYC with both in the top 10. Fellow Junior, Riley Grimes rode to a 16th place finish. In the Colorado League, Legacy riders are recognized for their participation for all 4 years of High School. For GVYC, Porter Landis led the Legacy crew in 32nd place followed by Rowan Ferguson in 38th.  Daniel Lawrence valiantly battled being sick all week and, despite putting in a huge effort, was pulled after the 2nd lap to finish 42nd.

The second largest category of the day was the Sophomore Boys with 5 from GVYC racing this competitive category.  In the end, Max Xu was the top finisher in 13th place narrowly edging out Cade Gardner in 15th who missed 14th place by half a second in a thrilling sprint finish.  Rounding out GVYC Sophomore boys were Jaxon Engbarth (29th), Oliver Gustafson (55th) and Liam Preslan (58th).

The JV and Sophomore Girls rolled into the start corral ready to give their best.  This group has the widest range of experience, so there were sure to be surprises!  Brand new to GVYC and competing in her first race ever, Brook Cox sped to a 3rd place finish.  Legacy rider Sofia Reitz finished 12th and another rookie, Moorea McCary crossed the line in 15th. In the sophomore category, multi-talented rider, Kyra Finney had a great run to finish 7th with new GVYC rider, Mayzie Jones, right on her heels in 8th.

Last, but not least were the Freshman Boys and Girls. As the first race in their High School careers, there are lots of unknowns for the racers and the league.  So, the first race is set up as a time trial to determine seeding for the next season. The slightly different format turned out well for GVYC Enduro and XC racer, Kailar Johnson who finished 8th.  Shaun Polson rode to a 15th place time with teammate Sam Hornok just missing the top 20 in 22nd.  Jacob Lawrence and Quinn Allen finished within a few seconds of each other in 28th and 29th places with Jayden Dahl just a few places behind in 36th.

In total, GVYC was the largest team in Leadville with 27 riders from GJHS, 10 from Fruita-Monument and 4 from Palisade.  Even though they race for their specific schools, all the GVYC riders pushed, supported, encouraged and cheered on their teammates throughout the day.  Proud parents watched and cheered while coaches got athletes ready and focused for their races. It was truly a team effort that sets the foundation for the rest of the season.  Next up, the GVYC squad takes on the Haymaker Classic in Eagle, CO. on September 7th.
