Start/Finish nestled below the Collegiates

Thank you all so much for all that you do for Grand Valley Youth Cycling.  What you all do as Club Sponsors, Coaches, District Administrators and lovers of bikes, is invaluable to us!  We’re off to another great season of bike racing here in the Grand Valley…With over 60 riders registered to the team, we’ve been hitting the trails with a head of steam!  Practice started back at the beginning of the month with Team Camp here in Grand Junction.  We’ve been working hard ever since then to get ready for the season, and this weekend, we made it happen!

Taking advantage of a little shade….to beat the heat!

High School Mountain Bike Racing took us south this weekend to Nathrop, CO.  We couldn’t hope for a more beautiful venue.  Nestled at the base of the Collegiate Peaks, our athletes raced 2-4 laps on a 6 mile course with over 500 feet of climbing.  The trail twisted along the top of a mesa before descending to a fast and fun section of trail along a Chalk Creek, before climbing back out and making it’s way down to the Start/Finish line!

Are you ready?!

GVYC Showed up to the Chalk Creek Stampede in grand fashion.   34 Racers took to the course and showed true heart and grit as they made their way around the course in the varying temperatures during the day… which ranged from quite cold… to really hot.  Every racer finished the day with a smile on their face and tired legs.  We even had racers who were injured show up to cheer on their friends and support the team!   A couple of rookies to the team put up amazing races as Ean Smith, racing for Fruita and Hayden Fox, racing for Grand Junction passed over 100 riders each during their races to finish towards the front of the pack.  Sterling Schrader and Rylan Birch racing for Palisade showed that all those hot summer miles really pay off, with their 6th and 7th place finishes in the Sophomore division.   Annika Sisac of GJ, Amber Lobato from Central,  and Cole Pierce and Luke Shrader from Palisade put together amazing performances in their first ever Varsity Races…  Needless to say, we are so excited to see what comes from these and all of our racers as our season continues.
I’ve always felt that success is measured in smiles, not podiums, but we all have our opinions… this weekend we definitely found both forms of success.  In the team competition, Palisade stood atop the podium in the Division 3 category with GJ close behind in 4th.  Fruita held their own in Division 2 with a 10th place finish in the team category.

Palisade for the WIN!

Heres to many more miles and smiles.  Thank you you all for all you do to support youth cycling in the Grand Valley!  Until next time… may the trail raise to meet your tires and the wind be always at your back (unless it’s a loop, then it’ll probably be in your face for a bit… but we’ve got this!)!
Thanks Again,Asst. Coach, Gerry Verdoner, and the Grand Valley Youth Cycling family!
