High School Racing
August-October

Picture

High School Mountain biking is the fastest growing high school sport!

Boys and Girls from the Grand Valley area high schools make up the team.  Both experienced and beginner riders are welcome.  We have had students join the team who had never ridden on a single track trail before.
The team is affiliated with NICA and the Colorado High School Cycling League.

our season

The Colorado High School mountain bike league is a fall sport.  Typically, the season starts around the beginning of August, and goes through the end of October.
The GVYC team trains and travels together to 4 conference races and a state championship race.  While racing is not mandatory, it is encouraged.  The heart of the high school team is skill development embedded in a culture of fun camaraderie.
All riders need to register with the Colorado League  - see the "How to Join" page for details on signing up

Practices

The team rides together 3-4 times per week, of which two are mandatory.  All high schools ride together as a team.  We break up into smaller groups of 4-6 riders based on skill level and training goals.  There is usually two trained NICA coaches with each group of student athletes.
Practices are for two hours from 5pm-7pm, with some adjustments in time as the fall season progresses and it gets dark earlier.
Location for weekday practices is usually the Lunch Loop trail system or the land near the water tower off of South Camp Road.  Saturday rides are usually longer and we visit some of the other awesome trail systems in and around the Grand Valley
RACES
While the team enjoys practicing together as one large group, we all race for our respective high schools on race day.  It is a wonderful experience to be cheering on not only for your own school, but for your friends that race for a different school in the Grand Valley.
Each high school riders wears their own jersey in their school colors.
Racing is not mandatory but it is encouraged.  Each race entry fee is $60 paid to the Colorado League.  Races are held all over the sate of Colorado scheduled every other week beginning in late August.

COACHES AND VOLUNTEERS
We rely on a small army of dedicated adult volunteers for our coaches and ride leaders.   At a minimum they have training from NICA on risk management and coaching philosophy, CDC concussion training, basic first aid, CPR,  and passed a background check.  Some of our volunteers have gone further in their coaches training and attended the Colorado League coaches summit and have Wilderness First Aid skills.
Many parents give back to the team throughout the season helping manage hectic race weekends or hosting team dinners.  Several parents also serve on committees to help GVYC with long term goals.  We couldn't do this without your support!!
